Karate Union of Wales Mission Statement

The Karate Union of Wales is committed to the teaching and promotion of Shotokan Karate in a non-prejudiced & non political environment that is safe, enjoyable and fulfilling for every age and ability; where students of all martial arts are welcome to broaden their skills and knowledge and allow us in return to broaden our own.

Welcome to the Karate Union of Wales

The K.U.W. was founded in 1980 by its Chief Instructor, Shihan Mike O'Brien 8th Dan who was also the first Welshman to grade to 1st dan black belt in Shotokan Karate and was the first Welsh Shotokan organization to be independent of the K.U.G.B. (Karate Union of Great Britain).
In the three decades since its formation the K.U.W. and more to the point, Shihan Mike has produced some of the finest practitioner's of Shotokan Karate in the U.K. with many successes in competition all over Europe. Many of Wales' most successful karate organizations Chief Instructors are former K.U.W. students and instructors who have moved on and spread the gospel of Shotokan even further.

Why take up Shotokan?

Shotokan is the most powerful, dynamic and attractive style of karate. The benefits of practicing karate as with all martial arts are plentiful. As well as fitness, flexibility, self-defense and competitive sport, Karate instills self-confidence, self-discipline of the mind and body and teaches courtesy and respect of others.

Above all, Shotokan Karate is a true sport for all, which all the family can take part in, enjoy and achieve realistic personal goals.

If you are interested in trying Shotokan, please take a look at our South or North Wales Clubs pages for a class near you. All of our senior instructors hold an NVQ 2 coaching award, are First Aid qualified and undergo continuous training and assessment.
